Trinity Health Data Breach Investigation

What happened?

Trinity announced that on January 20, 2021, certain files containing the sensitive health information of its member organizations’ patients were exposed and downloaded by an unknown user.

So far, it has been reported that the sensitive health data of 586,689 patients were exposed in the Trinity data breach.[1]

The specific information exposed in the breach may include a “patient’s name, address, email, date of birth, healthcare provider, dates and types of health care services, medical record number, immunization type, lab results, medications, payment, payer name, and claims information.

This is at least the second major data breach involving Trinity reported in just the past 12 months. The first occurred between April 18 and May 16 of 2020[2] and reportedly exposed the sensitive data 3,320,726 individuals.[3]

Which health providers were affected by the most recent breach?

The Trinity Health member organizations with patients whose data may have been exposed in the breach include Saint Agnes Medical Center; Trinity Health of New England, Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic; Holy Cross Health Fort Lauderdale; Saint Alphonsus Health System; Loyola Medicine; Mercy Hospital and Medical Center; Saint Joseph Health System; Saint Joseph Mercy Health System; St. Joseph’s Health; MercyOne; Mercy Health; St. Peters Health Partners; Holy Cross Health Silver Spring; St. Francis Medical Center; Mount Caramel Health System; Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center; and Virtua Willingboro Hospital.
